A new searchable database, which is available to the public, hosted by the ILO’s Microinsurance Innovation Facility and the Center for Health Market Innovations, a public web platform managed by Results for Development, offers comprehensive look at health insurance programs for low-income families in the developing world.

Indonesia hosts a National UHC Seminar and JLN Workshop

Indonesia has committed to the creation of an integrated national health insurance scheme by January 1, 2014 and the momentum towards universal health coverage is growing quickly. Key stakeholders recently met at a national seminar and country planning workshop for universal health coverage to help design the roadmap for integration of major schemes by the 2014 deadline.

Indonesia is faced with a number of challenges as it designs its roadmap for reform. Logistically, healthcare coverage through the organizing agency, Askes, must be made operational and the infrastructure for healthcare providers must be established.

First day of World Health Assembly focuses on universal health-care coverage: The Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly, WHO’s annual global meeting of ministers and senior health officials, opened yesterday. Addressing the delegates, Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, described the impressive progress being made in public health and her optimism for the future.

Ali Ghufron Mukti, Acting Health Minister of Indonesia and long time Joint Learning Network for Universal Health Coverage (JLN) member, was elected Vice-President of the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly on Monday, May 21st along with four of his colleagues:

  • Dr. Esperanza Martinez (Paraguay)
  • Mr. Andrei Usatii (Republic of Moldova)
  • Dr. Suraya Dalil (Afghanistan)
  • Mr. Charles Sigoto (Solomon Islands)

In this role, Dr. Mukti will preside over the Assembly from May 21-26 along with Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan and the other newly elected Vice-Presidents.

Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) completes a study tour to RSBY and Aarogyasri

With support from the Joint Learning Fund (JLF), a seven-member delegation from Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) recently completed a study tour to two of India’s health insurance schemes – Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) in Delhi and Aarogyasri in Hyderabad – to gain a better understanding of the structure and operations of India’s call centers. The NHIA has been directed to establish a call center to ensure a good fit and integration of information technology (ICT) with claims administration and to provide customer service for subscribers.

Joint Learning Network member Dr. Eduardo Banzon recently published an Opinion Editorial on PhilHealth's commitment to providing affordable, comprehensive, and quality health care. This editorial was published on Tuesday, May 15 in the Business Mirror.

An excerpt from Dr. Banzon's editorial is posted below:

KALUSUGAN natin, segurado means that no Filipino will ever be financially afraid of getting sick, and that no one is left behind in the race toward universal health care and financial-risk protection.

*Health care has made large advances in the Philippines over the years. Medical care in selected hospitals is now comparable with the top medical centers in the world. Yearly, around 1,500 new physicians are licensed—expanding the number of available physicians for Filipinos.
