Strengthening health financing mechanisms to achieve UHC
In the wake of the Ebola outbreak in 2014, Liberia is strengthening their health system to improve access to essential health services.
Despite serious challenges, Liberia’s health system has strengthened since 2003. In 2007, the country introduced its Basic Package of Health Services and further expanded access in 2011 with an Essential Package of Health Services that mandated access to free health care services in all public health facilities.
Since the Ebola outbreak in 2014, Liberia has prioritized the creation of a centrally pooled health financing system to advance universal health coverage. This system and Liberia’s 2011-2021 National Health and Social Welfare Policy and Plan aim to ensure affordable access to high quality services regardless of a patient’s social status.
