JLN Contributes to Global Dialogue on Accelerating Political Leadership for Universal Health Coverage at WHA79

JLN joined global health leaders, policymakers, researchers, and development partners at a high-level roundtable on “Accelerating Political Progress on Universal Health Coverage (UHC)” held on the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79).

Convened by The George Institute for Global Health’s Universal Health Coverage Accelerator, in partnership with PATH and CISDI, the invitation-only dialogue brought together political champions, senior decision-makers, and civil society leaders to explore how countries can strengthen and sustain political momentum for UHC reforms.

The roundtable marked the first public event of the newly launched UHC Accelerator, a global initiative designed to support national leaders and reform champions in advancing UHC through evidence-informed policymaking, peer learning, and strategic collaboration. Discussions focused on identifying political barriers that continue to slow UHC progress, exploring practical pathways from commitment to implementation, and examining how international partners can better support country-led reforms.

Drawing on JLN’s experience working across more than 40 countries, Rahul S. Reddy, Executive Director,  shared insights on how political commitment for UHC is built and sustained through inclusive stakeholder engagement, strong country ownership, and continuous learning. He emphasized that while political declarations are important, translating ambition into results requires sustained implementation efforts, adaptive leadership, and mechanisms that enable countries to learn from one another’s successes and challenges.

“Countries often know where they want to go on the path to Universal Health Coverage. The challenge is maintaining momentum through complex implementation realities. Peer learning and trusted platforms for collaboration help leaders navigate those challenges and accelerate reform,” he noted.

Participants also explored how global initiatives, technical partners, and financing institutions can align their support around national priorities, strengthen implementation capacity, and bridge the gap between research and policy action. The discussion coincided with the launch of a special publication highlighting emerging evidence and lessons on accelerating UHC reforms globally.

For JLN, the dialogue reinforced the importance of political leadership as a critical driver of health system transformation. Over the past 15 years, JLN has supported countries in translating policy aspirations into practical reforms through collaborative learning on health financing, primary health care, digital health, provider payment systems, and other core components of UHC.

As countries work toward achieving Universal Health Coverage amid evolving fiscal and political landscapes, JLN remains committed to supporting leaders with the knowledge, peer connections, and implementation insights needed to drive sustainable, country-led change.
